It is worth asking how much of Kaien's typical happy go lucky self is exaggerated. As a youth, Kaien was quite violent and cold-blooded as a vampire hunter, to the point where he was very notorious with the Vampire Hunter's Association. Not much is known of his personality back then but it's safe to say that he was a hard and stoic individual.
After his run in with Juuri however, Kaien's personality seems to have altered for what some may argue the better. Now well into his adult year, his demeanor is decidedly that of a loving father; to his children, students and, indeed, any others he comes across. If you have a stray and wandering child, it is a safe bet that Kaien will be the first to attempt to help them. This extends to most others as well - Kaien will aid anyone that he can in any way that he can. He is quite selfless in this regard and really has a talent for being gentle and comforting to those who need it.
He can also be called outlandishly silly. Kaien is no stranger to sporting a big, goofy grin and one of his favorite hobbies just happens to be goading and teasing Zero Kiryuu, his adopted son. His teasing is never meant to be harmful; merely silly and exasperating, particularly to his young charge. Don't put fits of cooing, over-exaggeration or wild grinning past him however.
Despite all of his silliness, the Headmaster really is a smart and intelligent man. He's quite knowledgable on lots of different topics, particularly when they deal with vampires, and is an excellent cook as well.
The Headmaster's only wish is to preserve peace; he does not relish having to use force in any way, shape or form. The use of force seems to remind this kind man of the person he was in his vampire hunter days. He makes a clear distinction now between the man who was the vampire hunter and the man who now seeks some sort of peaceful harmony between vampire and human. In a way, his current gentle demeanor and goofiness is a means of separating himself further from this man he once was.
This does not mean he is not a good hunter. Kaien was know as "The Vampire Without Fangs" within the Hunter's Association and was even offered Presidency of the entire Association thanks to his prowess and fighting ability. He is very skilled with a sword, bearing quite a bit of strength as well as speed, and is particularly knowledgeable in anti-vampire weapons.
Kaien does this all, however, with something of a serious and thoughtful air. His experiences of the past - the killing, the fighting and his own attitude of those days - seem to have left quite an impression on the older man. In silence and alone, he will often ruminate over problems and arising issues as well as lament for things that must be done and things to come.
Kaien can be serious when the need arises and he has been known to keep a secret or two as well (such as Yuuki's actual identity). He tends to view issues on how they work in the larger scheme of things and carefully plans how he reacts with them. He shows a great deal of sympathy however, often doing things that he knows to be in the person's best interests (or that he deems to be in their best interest).
